Not one to follow trends, Emily Mahy’s range of handmade bags are inspired by the beauty and magic of the fantastical Lewis Carroll novel, Alice in Wonderland.
Starting out creating handbags from vintage leather jackets, Go Ask Alice customers received individual stories written by Emily’s writer friends imagining the leather jackets’ histories. A beautiful baby and move from Melbourne later, Emily now designs and makes pieces from new leather and canvas in her Auckland workshop.
Taking a leap of faith to follow her creative dreams has worked well with the demands of family life too. As the child of an artistic father the desire to create balance in her own life is something that has guided her along the way. “My father was a glass blower who worked from home and provided for his family by doing what he loved. I feel the same satisfaction doing what I do, so you could say it’s in the blood".
